  • A book coach usually works with writers while a book is being developed, rather than only once a manuscript is complete.

    Depending on the project, this may involve discussing ideas and structure, providing feedback during drafting and revision, and helping writers think through submission or publication options where relevant.

    Unlike one-off editorial input, book coaching is usually an ongoing working relationship that develops alongside the manuscript.

  • An editor usually comes in to work on a manuscript when it is complete. A book coach is with you along the way, and perhaps from the beginning of your book project.

  • Yes. Manuscript assessment is a separate service.

    Where book coaching tends to involve ongoing work as a manuscript develops, a manuscript assessment offers a detailed editorial reading and evaluation of a draft at a particular stage in its development.

  • No, most packages don’t require it.

  • Not necessarily. Some writers arrive with a clear plan already in place and may be well suited to beginning with longer-term coaching. However, the 5-week intensive provides a strong foundation and is often recommended as a starting point, particularly for writers seeking greater clarity, direction and momentum with a novel. During the enquiry and onboarding process, we can discuss which option is likely to support your work most effectively.

  • I work with writers at different stages, from first novels to projects with more experienced writers, but because coaching is highly individual I take on a limited number of clients at a time. An initial conversation helps us decide whether the coaching and timing are right for your project.

  • Not at all. Some writers I work with have advanced degrees and some do not. My background includes teaching on MA and MFA programmes, but many writers come to coaching because they want the depth of discussion and manuscript development often found in advanced creative writing programmes, without enrolling on a university course. What matters most is commitment to the manuscript and a willingness to engage with the process, rather than formal qualifications.
